Two widespread current notions of consciousness are physicalism, i.e. the perspective that assumes physical reality, matter, as fundamental, and bottom-up panpsychism, i.e. the perspective that takes everything as possessing mind or consciousness and higher levels of consciousness consisting of a combination of more elementary levels. Bernardo Kastrup will argue for an idealist (consciousness only) ontology consistent with empirical observations, which seeks to explain the facts of nature more parsimoniously than physicalism and bottom-up panpsychism. This ontology also attempts to offer more explanatory power than both physicalism and bottom-up panpsychism, in that it does not fall prey to either the \u2018hard problem of consciousness\u2019 (the challenge of deducing consciousness from matter) or the \u2018subject combination problem,\u2019 (the challenge of deducing higher levels of consciousness from lower levels). It can be summarized as follows: spatially unbound consciousness is posited to be the only ontological reality, the ultimate nature of everything. We, as well as all other living organisms, are dissociated alters of this unbound consciousness, similarly to what happens in multiple personality disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bernardo Kastrup<\/strong> is the executive director of Essentia Foundation<\/em><\/a>. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. He has a PhD in philosophy (ontology, philosophy of mind) and a second PhD in computer engineering (reconfigurable computing, artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN<\/a>) and the Philips Research Laboratories<\/a> (where the ‘Casimir Effect<\/a>‘ of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). Formulated in detail in many academic papers and books, his ideas have been featured on Scientific American<\/em><\/a>, the Institute of Art and Ideas<\/em><\/a>, the Blog of the American Philosophical Association<\/em><\/a> and Big Think<\/em><\/a>, among others.
